I am looking for some new music and I hope readers of this site will be able to help me. I want to find some new amazing covers of songs and all I ask you to do is comment on this post (or send me a tweet) with the address of the YouTube video of a song you recommend. To get things started below are two videos of great covers I have heard recently.

Skinny Love originally by Bon Iver is covered by Birdie.

Seven Nation Army originally by The White Stripes is covered by Ben L’Oncle Soul.

What do you think of these covers? I am looking forward to hearing the covers you have to share.

Before today if someone had asked me if I like Electro House (not even entirely sure what it means) I would have said no. However, I have found three Electro House songs today that I really, really like and one in particular I can’t stop listening too. The songs are all covers of songs I like which is perhaps why I like these Electro House songs so much. Anyway here are the three songs:

And my favourite.

What do you think of these songs? Let me know of any other Electro House songs I should be aware of, as you can tell I am new to this genre.

I hate that it has come to this. As the eagle-eyed of you might have noticed over the past few weeks I have been very lax with my blog post writing on all the sites I write for. This is because I have been somewhat distracted with financial issues, doing a Masters is no cheap thing, and I can assure you that the Euro Zone’s financial situation pales in comparison to mine. This got me thinking about alternative ways I can help my finances and I have come up with one idea I wish to share with you.

I am now setting up the “Michael Gillett bail out fund”. This is an entirely donation based endeavour and exists only to allow people who would like to help to be able to do so. However, as a reward for those who do donate I shall be setting up a Hall of Fame page on here to thank those who have donated £5 or more (unless you wish to stay anonymous). Any amounts significantly over £5 will earn the donator a more prominent place on the Hall of Fame, with more info including a name, picture, bio and links.

If you choose to donate then please email me after with the info you want to be included on the Hall of Fame and the amount you donated. The “donate” button can be found at the bottom of this post.

As I said at the beginning of this post I hate that it has come to this. I refuse to ask for any money however it is now possible that if anyone wishes to help me out then they can do so.

On the weekend I shared some of the music I have been listening to last week, that list of music included a song by Charlene Soraia and since then I have heard some music by Charlene. These tracks come straight from Charlene who is a fellow active Twitter user. I have to say that her music is great, her songs are very calming whilst some are actually different from the kinds of music I’ve listened to before and all the better for it. Below is a calming song which I think the word “psychedelic” describes well.

The next video is an upbeat song called “bike” but actually has nothing to do with bikes. The song was recorded from The Purple Rooms which is evidently an intimate venue for artists to perform their music live. The sound of this song is great even if the quality of the recording isn’t top notch.

The final song I want to share with you is from Charlene’s soon to be released album, Moonchild, and is also found on her single Wherever You Will Go. The song is called Lightyears and an upbeat, relaxing song.

If you visit Charlene’s website you can hear “Postcards from iO” which is another song from her debut album. I am looking forward to getting Moonchild when it is released on November 21st.

Later this month Nokia will be holding its annual event Nokia World which I’m very excited about. Its highly likely that the company will announce its Windows Phone. Well actually multiple Windows Phones. How exciting!

Nokia, despite being heavily criticised over recent months/years, has always made great hardware and the cameras on its devices are often best in class. Combine this level of great hardware design and features with the great software, Windows Phone, and it should lead to some very exciting possibilities indeed. I’m hoping that Nokia really push the boundaries with the design and the cameras of their Windows Phones. In addition to announcements about its new Windows Phones I’m hoping that Nokia will elaborate on its plans for Windows Phone over the next year.

I’m also very excited to hear about what Nokia has planned to do to help the “Third Ecosystem”. What apps will the company announce? What additional resources will the company being making available for Windows Phones developers and users? Bear in mind that Nokia owns the great mapping service, Navteq, which could lead some great location/mapping experiences on Windows Phone.

Nokia World takes starts on October 26th in London and I’m excited.

First up is a song from a new artist, Charlene Soraia, it’s a beautiful cover Wherever You Will Go which was originally sung by The Calling. Readers in the UK might recognise the song from the TV as it is currently being used as the music to the stunning Twinnings advert.

The next artist I have been enjoying this week is an old artist but with a new album that features duets with some very contemporary artists. Yes Tony Bennett has a new album out revisiting some classic tunes but with the help of Lady Gaga, Michael Bubble and the late Amy Winehouse. I especially like his duet with Lady Gaga, its a very good version of The Lady Is A Tramp, don’t be put off by Lady Gaga, she actually has a good singing voice (if she chooses to use it properly). You can also see Tony Bennett on Later… with Jools Holland from last week on the iPlayer.

I’ve also been listing to another older artist this week, Toot and the Maytals. I’ve grown up with Reggae as my dad is an ardent fan and collector of all things reggae and all its various off shoots of music genres and therefore I know of Toots’ music. However, a couple of weeks ago I heard a very good song by Toots’ that I was unaware of, I’d properly heard it countless times before but never really noticed it. That song was Reggae Got Soul and you can see it in the below video.

One last song I thought I’d share with you is another older song that I stumbled across the other day after not hearing for years and that was One Of Us by Joan Osborne.

As always if you think I should be made aware of some new, or indeed old music, then please don’t hesitate to contact me or leave a comment on here.

I have just read an interesting article, on The Guardian’s new Facebook app, about a new 22 year old singer to the blues scene called Jamie N Commons. Commons’ debut album is going to be released by Luv Luv Luv records on October 17th, it is made up of 5 tracks and is called The Baron.

Below is the video for The Preacher, the lead track from Commons’ debut album.

You can listen to three of Commons’ tracks his SoundCloud site and I have say that they are excellent and I am really looking forward to his new album. There is an event in London on the 17th that will mark the launch of Common’s new album, I think I will attempt to go to it.

Now of course I might be ever so slightly biased as I actually went to school with Jamie but sadly I have only heard about this album today. I plan to find and listen to more of Jamie’s work, I hope Zune make his upcoming album available on the Marketplace soon.

What do you think? Do you like Commons’ music? You can like Jamie on Facebook.

I have long been a fan of Trudi Canavan and have read all her books. I was therefore very excited to hear that should would continue to write books set in the same world as her first trilogy, The Black Magician Trilogy. I have since bought the two books in the latest trilogy, the Traitor Spy Trilogy and last week finished reading The Rouge. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I am now really looking forward to reading the final book in the trilogy to see how all the lose threads tie up.

Trudi Canavan’s books, both those aimed at adults and those that are meant more for younger people, are fantasy but what I like to call “Tolkien-Fantasy” as its not quite as crazy as Pratchett’s fantasy. If you like fantasy and are looking for something new to read then I would highly recommend getting a copy of The Magicians Guild, the first in the Black Magician Trilogy or The Priestess of the White which is the first of another trilogy set in a different world and explores more adult themes.

The book I am now reading is The Wise Man’s Fear which is the second book by Patrick Rothfuss and at just shy of 1000 pages it could take e some time to read it. I seem to remember that The Name of the Wind, Rothfuss’ first book was one of the best books I’d ever read and it’s been a long wait for the follow up book to be released. Again, this is another fantasy book.
